Germany, Poland snub EU… to burn more coal

The governments of France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Denmark, Spain, Portugal and Luxembourg have launched an appeal to boost EU climate action ahead of a major summit on the future of Europe taking place in Romania next Thursday (9 May). A leaked “non-paper” by the eight countries calls on the European Union to step up the fight against climate change and sign up to a European Commission plan to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions “by 2050 at the latest”. Germany, Italy and Poland were notably absent from the list of signatories of the leaked document, obtained by EURACTIV, echoing divisions at a recent EU summit.

Poland to build its largest coal plant

“Elektrownia Ostroleka, a company co-owned by energy giants Enea and Energa, has been awarded a 15-year contract to build and operate Ostroleka C, set to become Poland’s largest coal-fired power plant. The contract is worth 6.023 billion zloty (1.4 billion euros) in state capacity subsidies, with the plant expected to deliver 853 MW of energy by 2023.” The perfect coda to the recently concluded UN climate conference.

Solidarity for burning more coal

The Solidarity-Heartland Institute statement adds that “neither organisation opposes the goal of clean air nor supports the elimination of coal from the world’s energy portfolio” and calls on “an end to the war on science and scientists by powerful state-backed forces”.

First official sponsor of UN climate conference in Poland is… a coal company!

Poland’s Jastrzebska Spolka Weglowa is Europe’s largest coking coal producer. Today it announced: “Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa, in agreement with the Ministry of the Environment, became the first official partner of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP24).” JSW’s climate “solution” is to plant trees… which will benefit from all the CO2 emitted from burning the coal mined. Perfect.
