Report: China not reducing fossil fuel use or emissions

“Although China promised under its commitment to the Paris Agreement to ‘peak’ emissions around 2030, to decrease carbon dioxide emissions per unit of economic output and to use more green energy, China’s greenhouse gas emissions increased by 1.7% in 2017 and are projected to grow by 4.7% in 2018. Coal isn’t dead. China proves it.

“Responsible for 46% of global production and 51% of global demand, China’s coal reliance is not falling nearly as fast as some like to claim… China quietly has 210,000 MW of new coal capacity in the works, or nearly a 25% expansion… China actually now accounts for 45% of the coal-based electricity generated in the world, compared to 37% back in 2010.”

Report: China Leads Investment in Coal Projects

“China has committed or proposed about $36 billion in financing for 102 gigawatts of coal-fired capacity in 23 countries. That represents more than a quarter of all coal-fired capacity under development outside of China… The Chinese government has identified coal plant construction and operation as a strategy investment for international development and state support for the country.” Again, US utilities are accomplishing nothing by shuttering coal plants. Claims to the contrary are lies.
