Entergy has refused to explain to us why it settled with the Sierra Club to shutter to perfectly good coal plants in Arkansas. We respond. Click here and here for background.

Mr. Leo P. Denault
Chairman & CEO
Entergy Corporation

New Orleans, LA 70113
Dear Mr. Denault:
Thank you for responding to our letter of December 10 concerning the settlement between Entergy and the Sierra Club et al. that will shut down the White Bluff Steam Electric Station and the Independent Steam Electric Station.
Our review of the available federal and state data bases indicates that:
1. Both plants are well-run and well-maintained; and
2. Arkansas air quality complies with federal Clean Air Act standards.
Accordingly, there is no environmental justification for shuttering these two plants.
Since the Sierra Club did not pressure you to shutter the plants because of their costs, we remain perplexed as to the rationale for your decision. The settlement is not only conditional pending court review, but it must also be put out for notice and comment by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Unless you are willing to offer some rationale for the planned closures, we will assume that:
1. The plant closures lack substantive bases; and
2. Entergy is shuttering the plants merely to appease the extremist Sierra Club.
If you believe that we are wrong, please explain. Alternatively, we are happy to discuss this matter with you. We look forward to your prompt response.
Sincerely,
Fredrick D. Palmer
